There are a lot of wonderful classic novels available in the public domain, and they’re just sitting there, available for you to download and read at your leisure. Using homebrew software, you can even put those novels on your Nintendo DS. But Nintendo’s just done the likes of Project Gutenberg and homebrew one better with their 100 Classic Book Collection.

Today the developers of the new homework-helper website, Shmoop, sent an email to the Reference Department asking us to take a look at their site. Shmoop, currently in beta (testing) mode, has three sections: Literature, American History and Poetry. Each section critiques classic books, poems or frequently-assigned historical events in a way that will help students understand, review and write about the work or topic. Juniors and seniors in the Rockwood School District soon will be able to boldly go where no Rockwood students have gone before.
Kathy Ryan, the district's kindergarten through 12th grade language arts/speech/journalism curriculum coordinator, recently told the Board of Education about a new, elective, science fiction literature course planned for high school juniors and seniors.
The course will be offered in the 2009-2010 school year.

Terry Pratchett said he was "flabbergasted" to receive a knighthood.
The writer, 60, who is best known for his hugely popular Discworld series of comic fantasy novels, received the honour for services to literature.
He has sold more than 55 million books worldwide and had his works translated into 33 languages and adapted into various television programmes and animations.
